I did custom check on WindowsXPSP2 and it said that I needed to upgrade
Silicon Image Sil0680 ATA/133 controller. After download a got a Save Dump
message. One CD and two DVD/CD burners and sound are gone. They do not show
up on My Computer. In Device Manager they show error on the 3 drives. I
have tried to restore and have unstalled and reinstalled but they are still
gone.
Please help.

Hi Don D,

What is the wording of the error that shows up in Device Manager for the 3
drives?

Hi Patti,
The Device Manager under Properties: "Windows cannot load the device driver
for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing.(code39)" I have
tried the update driver, roll back and uninstall.

See if the information in this MSKB article helps you to resolve the
problem:

You can no longer access the CD drive or the DVD drive, or you receive an
error message after you remove a CD recording program or a DVD recording
program in Windows XP: "error code 31"
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b/314060/en-us

Although error code 39 is not mentioned in the title of the article, it is
mentioned in the "Symptoms of the problem" section.

I have had to repair the CD/DVD missing issue many times successfully
by using this registry file merge called CD Gone.

CD drives may vanish in Windows Explorer, Device Manager, etc.
Merge the cdgone.reg file to the registry and a reboot usually
restores the missing drives.

All you have to do is copy the text below starting with REGEDIT4 into
a text file and save it cdgone.reg then follow these steps:

Rt click the file called cdgone.reg that you just created
Then left click on merge
Next shut the computer down and reboot.
You will have your CD drives back after rebooting.

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}]
"UpperFilters"=-
"LowerFilters"=-

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdr4_2K]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdralw2k]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdudf]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\UdfReadr]

I must not have saved the cdgone.reg file correctly because when I right
click it "merge" is not a menu option. How do I correct this?

Please, thank you.

You saved the file using notepad I hope. When you saved it the ext of
..txt is automatically put at the end of the file name and you have to
change it. Delete .txt extension at the end of the file name and
change it to cdgone.reg, then right click it, then left click on merge
then reboot.

Best of luck. It should work
