I have an HP laptop that will now only recognize the D drive as "HP Recovery
Disc" no matter what I do. I can watch a DVD, but cannot setup any new
software - does not recognize any setup command.

I think rather than seeing an optical disk, the D: drive is probably now
pointing towards the Recovery Partition on your Hard Drive which should
probably be hidden.

Let's see what letter is allocated to what drive. Right click on My
Computer and select Manage. On the following screen, click on Disk
Management.

The drives should now appear on the right hand side of the screen. Which
drive letter is allocated to which drive?
