Forgive a newbie a daft question, however,
I have just got a Dell and have scanned the lit that came with it and cannot
find what the DVD and CD burn speeds are. I want to buy said media but as
they all seem to ask what speed the various drives burn at, I am at a loss.
Any suggestions as r-clicking the drive and selecting properties wont tell me?

How about looking at your invoice?

If your computer is new, the speed of optical media (CD or DVD) is a
non-issue. You are free to purchase optical media of any speed.

Look at the logo on the front of the drive; it's usually right
there.

Dell? New?

You either got a 48x+ CD Burner or a 16X DVD+/-RW burner that will do 48X
CDs as well.

In general - if you buy the highest speed media - you are fine - it is rated
UP TO that speed.. So if you cannot burn that fast - it won't try.

Go to My Computer, right-click the CD Drive, click Properties and then click
the Recording tab. The second drop-down box has a list of available burning
speeds.
You can use any form of CD/DVD that the drive supports to burn, but make
sure you set the speed in this box to match the one specified on the CD/DVD
packaging.

The one problem is (if Paul wants to use them) he doesn't know at what speed
the writer will use RW discs (either CD or DVD). I use these myself for
weekly backup purposes & rotate a bunch of them instead of just throwing away
R discs into the trash. Helps with the ecology also! Just my added 2 cents
;>).

Yes - but if he buys the highest rated speed he can - he's covered.

Doesn't matter if his burner only supports 2X DVD-RW, if the DVD-RW disc
itself is rated above that...

I think the OP was actually referring to the drive speed i.e. a CD burner
52x32x32 etc (and used the incorrect terminology) rather than the "disk
speed"

On the packaging of a packet of compact/DVDdisks, the "speed" refers to the
drive's speed, not the disks.
