I had to replace a TssT corp. sh-s223c dvd/cdrom burner. I installed
the exact same brand new burner. It plays audio cd's and dvd's just
fine. It is recognized by the XP/SP3 system but not recognized as a
burner. Properties does have a recording tab. Tried the Mr.Fixit prgm.
I got from the MS Knowledge Base. It say's the cdrom does not have
burning capability. I'm darn sure it does. All I did was unplug the
old one and plug in the new one. Any ideas on getting the burning
capability to work? Thanks.

Did you DL the latest drivers?

http://www.burn4free.com/toshiba-sam...ge-technology-
corporation/tsstcorp-sh-s223c.htm

If you did, it IS possible the unit is faulty.

Try Nero Infotool, free for download. I think this was written
by Eric Deppe, and older versions are also available from other
sites.

http://ftp6.nero.com/tools/InfoTool.zip

http://majorgeeks.com/Nero_InfoTool_d120.html

The tick boxes, as shown in this example, tell you what
the hardware supports.

The "Mr.Fixit" can fix a registry issue with UpperFilter/LowerFilter.
It's also possible that other software present on the computer, might
interfere, such as a "virtual cd" mounter. Perhaps the things reporting
write capability, are reporting the capabilities of the virtual cd
rather than any physical drive in the computer.

Try this:

- Delete the optical drive from Device Manager. Also delete the
controller that that drive is on from Device manager. Shut down the
computer (don't restart.)

- Physically disconnect the drive from the cable. Start up the computer
and let it discover and install the controller. Shut the computer down
again.

- Reconnect the optical drive. Start up the computer and let it
discover and install the drive. Cross your fingers.

Hopefully by now everything will have sorted itself out.

Thanks to Paul, Nil and Peter Foldes. Tried everything suggested.
Spent day's running 'fix its', trashing cd disc's, screwing with
Registry, downloading drivers, swapping drives and pulling out my
hair. No help. Finally I uninstalled Roxio Creator 2010 and now CD/DVD
drive works like a charm. Who needs stress when we have computers and
the programs that go with them? Thanks again.

Heh. I have an (older) version of Roxio installed, and it doesn't do that.
But apparently, in your case, it didn't do it either, until you changed the
drive. While it was still installed, did it itself (Roxio Creator) recognize the
drive as a burner and allow you to burn?

NO. All I ever got, no matter what I tried (and I tried ALOT) was "No
device detected" in the burning program. BIOS,Explorer et.al saw the
drive. It played both music cd's and dvd movies but would not work as
a burner. I now use CDburnerXP, cleaned out all references to Roxio,
and all is well. I will install Roxio on my Windows7 machine to
transfer my vhs tapes to cd's.
As you say, Roxio worked for all my needs until I replaced the drive
with an exact duplicate. Go figure.
