Three Cd drive types suddenly are not displaying in My
Computer. They show a conflict in the Device Manager and
after the ususal steps to correct i.e. uninstall and
reboot they still do not appear or work. After
completeing a R type reinstall with the download latest
from Microsoft enable during the installation and all
going well, the drives still do not appear. The operating
system and all my programs work fine.
I verified the integrity of the cd drives by installing a
new harddisk drive, after removing the xp drive the
Windows Millenium operating system and all went well with
the cd drive operating normally. Any ideas about this
very unusual situation

Goto http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpcd.php#problems
See the second "problem" (read the caveats)
Run the provided registry patch

That should fix your problem (basically, a filter driver is missing or
non-operational, the registry patch will delete the filter drivers
references for your cdrom(s))

Basically, the reg file from above carries out the steps displayed at this
website
