CD drives not working

Hi,
I recently changed the fan in the PSU on my machine, in order to do this I
had to remove the power plugs to both CD drives, not the ribbon cables, just
the power plugs. Obviously this was done on a table with all the power and
other leads removed.
I put it all back together and everything works fine except the CD drives. I
know the power plugs are connected because they both light up and open and
close. I also have an external DVD burner and that wont work either.
In 'My computer' all three icons for the CD drives D, E and F drives are
gone. Device manager shows them all with the yellow exclamation mark, right
clicking and going 'Update Driver' returns 'Cannot update driver'
I cant see how removing the plugs and refitting them with the power off
would make any difference, but nevertheless, none of them will work even
though the computer is seeing them all. I suppose it may be a coincidence
but it seems odd!
Any advice please? I know a little about these things but I'm by no means an
expert,
Regards,
Alan.

Thanks very much for that but it made no difference I'm afraid. Any other
suggestions anyone? My kids use this machine too, could something have been
deleted or could it be a virus or malware of some kind?
Regards,
Alan.

Hi,
Just for information, I found this on the net from
http://www.theeldergeek.com and my problem is now resolved.
It worked a treat even though I was nervous about using it, I hate messing
with things that I don't understand,
Regards,
Alan.

Restore Missing CD or DVD Drive
Reports have filtered in that CD or DVD drives will suddenly cease to
exist in XP systems. Most often this has been reported in conjunction with
program installations and Windows upgrades, but it has also happened for no
apparent reason. This tweak will restore the missing drives after a reboot.

[Start] [Run] [Regedit]
Registry Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class
Key Name: {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Value Data: [Delete All Value Data from UpperFilters and LowerFilters]
Note: Do not delete the Key or the Multi-String Values. Delete only the data
values.
Exit Registry and Reboot

Al three are lost right after you worked in the case.. you must have
accidentally pulled the ribbon cables loose, probably at the motherboard
end.
