CD Drives not working after Windows Updates

To All,

I am having problems with multiple Windows 2000 Professional PCs being
able to access the CD-Rom drives. The drive is OK in device manager,
and appears in Windows Explorer. When I insert a disc and try to
access it, Windows tells me to insert a disc. Sometimes the CD drive
will work, and sometimes it doesn't. I'm pretty sure that the problem
started after I installed a lot of Windows Updates. All of my PCs are
running Windows 2000 Professional SP4, with the latest updates. They
are all Dell PCs, but many different hardware configurations. Some are
OptiPlex and some are Latitude. Has anyone else come across this
problem? Thanks for your help!

This sounds more like a problem with the CD-ROM drive itself.

I have a virtually identical problem with a Samsung SW-240B CD-R/RW
drive. The problem is intermittent-- sometimes the drive works,
sometimes it locks up and Explorer will neither read a disk nor eject
it, sometimes not even after a reboot. It will not (ever) format or
write to a CD-R or RW disk w/ Roxio software (I'm trying Nero). I
recently swapped out the mother board due to unrelated problems but
symptoms did not change. I also updated the SW-240B to latest
firmware-- no help. The drive worked well in earlier W2K incarnations.
Suggestions??

Get a new drive. CD drives are not very reliable devices. Fortunately,
they're also cheap.
