I recently did a full clean install of windows xp and on
the first boot, windows recognized both of my cd-rom and
cd-rw drives and was able to read the windows xp install
disk. When I took out the install cd and put in a
different cd, both of the drives would not recognize any
cds.

In the device manager it says both cd drives are working
properly. What steps should I take to resolve this
issue???

Thanks in advance.

Did you resolve your problem? I have the same problem on both my
CD/DVD/R, CD/DVD/RW and on my floppy drive. They are recognized and
device manager says they are working, but none will work. CD drive
eject command works on both. CD/R always says disk is corrupted, even
without a disk inserted. CD/RW when clicked just causes the screen to
blank. Floppy always says the disk is not formatted, even when no disk
is inserted. I have gone on numerous site like this and have not find
any help yet. I'm going nuts trying to find the problem.

Regards.

I have just today experienced exactly the same problems with my CD/DVD/R,
CD/DVD/RW and floppy drives. The only thing I have done recently to my
machine is a Windows security update. I have no idea why this is happening.

From reading various newsgroups around the Micrsoft forums, I was able to
resolve my problem. After rebooting with my disk inside my DVD-ROM drive, I
noticed that the functionality of reading the disk with Windows Explorer had
returned, only to disappear again once I removed the disk and re-inserted it.
Thus, a software product that was loading at the later stages of my startup
was obviously causing my grief. It turned out to be an old version of Ahead
InCd (apparently a Flash ROM category of drive) that was fouling my system.
Once I uninstalled InCd, using my Add/Remove programs from the Control Panel,
my drives all began to work normally again. I'm not sure what triggered the
problem, as it happened quite suddenly this weekend, after years of
stability. A number of posts had indicated that "Flash ROM drives" were the
culprit. I wasn't too sure what that meant, but finally put the pieces
together.

Hope this helps anyone else who has experienced this problem.
