I recently added a second hard drive and that is present and working but now
I have no access or acknowledgement in either windows explorer or device
manager, they just disapeared?

Crack the case again and see if you managed to pull the IDE connector loose.
Also check the power leads, and if your CD/DVD drives are paired with the
hard disks on an IDE cable, ensure that the Master/Slave/Cable Select
jumpers are in the correct positions.
