CD drive won't recognised discs

I installed a new LiteOn 52nnn in our XP Home box. Am used to such work,
re-jumpering, changing the Bios settings etc. However, whilst the new drive
is visible at all levels - explorer, computer mgmt mmc, hardware mmc etc -
it will NOT read any sort of disc. All I get is the "Please insert a disc in
Drive E" message.

Have I missed something ? Am new to XP, after 7 years with a wonderfully
simple 95 machine !
