I recently noticed that my cd drive was not listed
under "My Computer" anymore, so I put a CD in and found
out that it no longer reads cd's! I must have
accidentally deleted a .dll file or something that ran
the CD player. I tried to fix it by going to the "Add
New Hardware Menu," but it said that a file was missing
or damaged, then when I tried it again it said "Windows
successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware
but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)." I might
need to download a missing file or something. I would
even re-install windows to fix the problem, but I can't,
because I can't read the System Restore disks in my CD
drive anymore! Will someone please help me get my CD
drive working again?

Check in BIOS to make sure the drive is being detected properly.

First, go into bios to see if the cdrom is recoginized
there. If it is, then try going into device manager and
right click on the cdrom drive and uninstall it, then
reboot. Windows should reinstall it for you. If it isnt
recoginized in bios, the turn your comp off & try
unplugging & replugging the ide cable (both ends) that
connects to the cdrom drive (the wide, flat cable).

Read Ron's remark. If all else fails, see Code 39 at Marfers XP notes at
