After copying files to a CD, the disk is automatically ejected. However,
after re-inserting the disk and checking the contents, I can't get the drive
to eject the disk by any means other than the faithful paper clip. Any ideas?
This has been an ongoing problem for a long time.

See if the same behaviour also occurs in windows safemode. Also see check in
BIOS.If problem didnt occur while checking in BIOS this could be a software
problem.

Could it be a damaged CD?

It's a faulty CD drive.
