CD Drive is not accessible using Windows XP

I am running Windows XP Pro on my laptop, and XP on my desktop. I have a game
CD which I wish to install on the laptop; I have successfully done the
installation from this game CD on the desktop. However, when I insert the CD
in the laptop CD drive, the problems start; first it doesn't auto-run. Then,
if I go to My Computer, right-click on the CD drive and select Open, I get
the following error message: "D:\is not accessible. The request could not be
performed because of an I/O device error". I get the same result when I go to
Start/Run and type in D:\Setup.exe. However, if I insert a different game CD
in the laptop CD drive, it auto-starts, and opens properly. Any clue as to
what the problem is?

Obvious question - have you examined the CD surface for smudges
and scratches ? Cleaning the disk might help, just don't use harsh
chemicals.

Some disks will just not read in certain optical drives no matter
what steps you try.

I did examine the CD and found no visible flaws. I think I will burn a copy
of the CD and see if that makes a difference. Thank you.

Taking your cue, I burned a CD copy of the disc that would not open on the
laptop. That solved the problem - the copy autostarted and allowed me to do
the installation on the laptop.
Thank you.
