CD drive does not read audio CD

My CD drive has magically stopped reading audio CDs, When I insert an audio
CD, the system shows there is no CD in the drive (through Control Panel, WMP,
My Computer, etc.). There is no problem reading a CD ROM. This is a new
problem (I've had the computer for a couple of years). It's not a matter of
the age of the CD, as I've had this problem with one CD of a two-disc set,
but not the other.

I tried turning off the system and rebooting--this worked once, but has not
worked in the three or four reboots since then.

I uninstalled and reinstalled the device driver (Device Manager says the
drive is working properly).

I searched for an updated device driver, but haven't found one.

I've gone through the AutoPlay options, so that doesn't seem to be the
problem.

To add to the confusion, if I keep switching CDs I can sometimes find one
that works.

Any thoughts or similar experiences?

(Using Windows XP)

I suspect that the problem is caused by a marginal CD drive. To confirm this
suspicion you would have to remove the drive and temporarily connect it to a
different PC to see if the problem persists. Alternatively you could borrow
someone else's CD drive and test it on your machine. Both methods are
somewhat tedious but you've got to go through the motions to make sure.

Might try to pick up a cd/dvd lens cleaning CD. Sometimes it works and you
could have some dust on the lens after 2 years...

.... but as these are based on audio CD technology, it may be that you won't
be able to read that either. Attempting to clean the lens is a good first
step, but my money is on the laser.

I'm having the same type of problem. My problems started two weeks ago on a
computer that is 4 months old. If you insert a disk sometimes it reads, some
times in does not. If you put in an audio disk it won't autoread, but if you
go to windows media you can play it. Remove that disk and install another,
but it won't update and show the new contents.

I found post that states go into the registry and remove the upperlimit and
lower limit, the problem I had was I only showed the Lower Limit, Deleted it
and it's a little bit better, but still won't auto read.

Using Vista Ultimate
