CD Drive: Device detected, but will not read disk.

I am working on a Windows 2000 (SP4 w/ updates) server. The cd-rom drive
will not read a disk. Always prompts with "Please insert a disk." The
Device Manager sees the drive. Removable storage/Physical sees the drive.
Disk Manager sees the drive. Windows Explorer sees the drive, but once I
select it, I get the "insert disk" prompt.

I have removed and reinstalled several times. I have tried multiple drives:
two different IDE drives on both the Primary and Secondary channels. I have
tried a SCSI drive. All have same symptom. I've removed the UpperFilters
and LowerFilters in the registry for the CD rom (Article ID : 270008).

I feel like I'm missing something right in front of me, but I can't figure
it out. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Todd

Does the optical drive work on another PC?

If not, it might be time to replace the drive.

Thanks for the response, but all three drives that I have tried (2 IDE, 1
SCSI) all work fine in other systems...

On the PC where it won't work, do other IDE devices work fine on the same
IDE Controller?

Is there another device already on that IDE Controller.... I'm presuming you
have checked the jumpers at the rear of the drive.

Also, try booting from a DOS floppy and see if they work there.

*! I figured out the problem. I tried yet another drive (my fourth), and it
worked. Must be that the native Windows 2000 driver is very particular about
the drive. The other drives did not have Windows 2000 specific drivers
(neither does this one that works - LG), but some manufacturers (like
Toshiba) said that all of their ATAPI drives work with Windows 2000. Not
this one that I have.

In any case, thanks for the responses.
