CD Drive Descriptions Have Changed

Hi
On the "my computer" page, under the column 'devices with removable storage'
there is a list of my cd drives. the list used to describe what each of my cd
drives could do (dvdrw drive, cdrw drive, etc.), now, all it says for each is
'cd drive'

i've tried rebooting, but it always comes up with the same generic
descriptions for my drives, how can i get it to go back to describing the
drives the way it used to?
(and, no, system restore won't help)
