Hello,

Got a strange problem lately......

My Win XP home edition computer cannot read files from cd r's I have
created on this very same computer.

The system has no problem reading commercially produced cd's (software
cd's, music cd's, etc,) but cannot read any cd's I have written using
this same computer.

Other computers can read my cd's, but not my own. What gives??

Thanks!

btw....have already researched groups and haven't found an answer.....

The one thing you didn't say is whether the drive can read CD-Rs written by
another PC, but I'm gussing that it can.

This sounds like a classic case of laser deterioration to the point that it
cannot write CD-Rs with enough of an image. The laser will output less
power when trying to read the faint image. All solid state lasers
deteriorate in use.

That makes perfect sense, I'll check it out and report back.

Thanks!!

Okay, here's what I discovered:

My cd drive cannot read cd's it itself burned today, or cd's it burned
in the past.

My cd drive can read some cd's other computers have burned. For
example, the drive can read cd's burned under Windows ME, from years
ago, but not cd's burned under Windows XP Home Edition, on my other
computer, today.

Other computers can read cd's burned (just today) on my drive.

I'm stumped.....any ideas, anyone??

Thanks,

Mark

Replace the drive. They cost next to peanuts these days.

tech.kyle,

Thanks for your reply.

When a cd is inserted in the drive, the drive goes thru its normal
routine of spinning up momentarily, looking for a readable disc, then
spins down, then nothing happens at all.

Clicking on My Computer, then Drive D, the cd drive reports "0 items".

The drive has no problem reading discs burned by other computers, it
just can't read its own. Wierd, huh??

It's not quite that simple.

If the laser has deteriorated to the point where the image it burns is not
as fully burnt as it should be, then that same laser in read mode outputs a
correspondingly weaker beam. The combination of weak image and weak laser
gives substantial read errors and a read failure. That disk when read on a
properly working drive may still produce read errors, but the error
correction protocol is able to recover the situation.
