My DVD rom drive can read dvds but not cds or cd roms. Any ideas why? I
have a presario 700 notebook.

If the CD laser failed this could be the result. Separate lasers are
used for each disk type.

Is there anything I can do to make the laser work again?

Not usually cost effective to repair. If it's removable you could try
putting it in another laptop to verify but usually dead is dead.
