icons have disapeared from my computer screen only c:
drive showing. but are still showing as installed in the
bios, can somone tell me how to get these back as i cant
use either of them

Same problem here. My CD-RW drive is suddenly "not
there" according to My Computer.

Do you see errors for your Cd/CDR/DVD in your device manager?

If so...

Goto http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpcd.php#problems
See the second "problem" (read the caveats)
Run the provided registry patch

That should fix your problem (basically, a filter driver is missing or
non-operational, the registry patch will delete the filter drivers
references for your cdrom(s))
