CD Disappeared

I have recently installed an external cd burner to my
toshiba tecra 8100 laptop. After one successful burn,
the icon for my internal cd drive disappeared from the
mycomputer file and I was unable to play cds on my
computer. I tried to use the add/remove hardware wizard
to reinstall the cd drive but it failed to find the cd
drive when it searched for new plug and play hardware to
install. Does anyone have any ideas on what I should try
next??
