I have a IDE\CDROM TSST CORP CD/DVDW TS-H552L 0614 OEM HP that will not
recognize 16X media. Samsung says that TS-H552L does not exist. Any help
would be appreciated.

Samsung has different part number for the OEM versions of their drives. They
will not help you directly since this drive is "branded" HP so you need to
contact HP.

Supposed to be the same as SH-W162L. (Of course, if the internal
identity info is different in the two drives, then applying
firmware flashes and the like, may be a problem.)

The guy determined this, by visiting samsungodd.com and checking the safety
certificate. The right-most menu has an entry for "SH-W162L (TS-H552L)".
Column 1 = "Half Height", Column 2 = "DVD-Writer", then examine the
contents of Column 3 menu.

Dialing in optical drives is freaky at the best of times. Every drive
is a half-finished development, with quirks about media or failures to
meet specs. The very first thing to do, is find a firmware update,
before wasting time testing media. And in the case of devices that
only ever have the original firmware... punt! A new drive is cheaper
than the frustration. Just make sure the new drive has new firmware,
released after the drive's initial release date. And with flashing
anything, there is always the possibility of "bricking" it.

A bit off topic, but... drives and cd media are a funny thing. A friend
of mine and I have been comparing them. Between us we have 5 drives in
3 PCs. We have noticed that some media on some drives just don't burn
at top speed. I only mention this FYI. You say 'won't recognize'
but that does not explain burn or read or both. But while still OT a
bit, I've found that even with 16 or 20x CD's on my 16x burners, I get
better success at 8 or 12x. Seems a good number of people have found
that for long term storage, you might want to burn slow and get just a
bit better burn. No proof of this, but if I make coasters with brand
X, I burn them slower and get less error.

Each DVD drive seem to have its own "internal| list of known
compatible meida codes (read from the DVD media "id" codes.) With the
link I posted (www.rpc1.org) the OP will have more detail guidance
since this is not a problem solely with Windows XP.

On one of my "top of their range" <grin> 20x Liteon dvd r/w drives, it only
burns at 20x using Sony dvd r's - drops to 16x using Maxcell and several
other "top" brands, ...actually the Liteon "Alldrive" drives consistently
prove themselves darned good drives !

....anyhooo ...t'other day I started using a spindle of Asda brand 16x
dvd -r's, and the first one burnt at 20x !
....I thought, "here comes a beer-mat," ...but, NO ! it was a good one,
....all so far burnt at 20x and were all god ones !

Would this be any 16X media or a specific brand? Sometimes a drive can be
fussy about its media brands.
