In safe mode, I can't write to a rewritable CD as the wizard says I need to
insert a writable disk. I've tried with a few disks, and it has been the same
problem, so I'd say it was a computer fault. Is it normal for CDs not to be
recognised in safe mode?

Safe mode starts with a limited driver set. So i'm not surprised that
burning doesn't work in safe mode.

But: why are you in safe mode, and can we help you operate in normal
mode again?

The computer I suspect has a virus, but even after scanning for viruses and
cleaning, deleting and quarantining all suspicious files, the computer won't
start back up normally. So I had to revert to safe mode and I want to bail
all my family's documents out before I attempt to clear the hard disk. Is
this a good idea? (to clear the hard disk)

Yes, sometimes reinstalling is the only way.

This is a VERY basic Cd burning program that *may* work in safe mode.
