CD and Zip Drives Gone

I've seen lots of threads about missing CD and DVD drives. I have the same
problem, and my Zip drive is gone, too.

I've tried the "Doug Knox" fix; I tried the "AUMSA" fix; I wiped my HD clean
and reinstalled XP; I replaced the ribbon cable from the MB to both my CD
drives; I've upgraded the BIOS (neither drive is found in there either);
I've tried the "upper and lower filters" registry fix from MS's knowledge
base, but nothing fixes this!

Neither of the CD drives show up in the BIOS, which I've flashed to the
latest version. I noticed also that my Zip drive is gone as well, but the
printer works. Since the Zip sits between the printer and the computer, it
seems that all those cables are fine.

What can I do to make these drives work again???

I am puzzled when you say that the ZIP sits between the
computer and the printer. Do you mean that you have a
parallel port ZIP in series with a parallel port printer?
If so, my own experience with such setups is that either
the printer will work OR the ZIP will work, but not both.
Try an internal ZIP, or a USB ZIP.

As for the CDROM problem, I agree with one of the previous
posts, strip the system to PC, monitor, keyboard, and
mouse. No external USB, parallel, firewire, SCSI, etc
devices. Then debug the CDROM problem. I am assuming a
common interal ATAPI CDROM. If it is external, how is it
connected and with what else on the same wire?
