What causes "Server error: Unknown web server type "apache" error.

The web server person said I updated pages via FTP & that I have to "reload"
my web site. Could updating via FTP cause this error?

Yes, if the server has FrontPage extensions installed, publishing using FTP will break them.
You need to publish to http://yourwebsite.com
