catastrophic media failure on secondary drive

I cant log on to my windows XP machine because I am
recieving an error when I log in

:Unable to complete the requested operation because of
either a catastrophic media failure or a data structure
corruption on the disk.

I am also finding that the system won't accept my
administrator password except when using the emergency
recovery console.
Using the console I can browse both hard drives although I
get an "access denied" message when trying to browse a sub-
folder on the secondary drive.
Any ideas? The data is still there but cant reach
