Catalyst - Omega for 2D

Switched out a Matrox video card for an ATI X1600XT (required the
Matrox on a A-V system). No question that the 2D peformance has
suffered. What drivers would yield the best 2D performance on this
board? Or am I missing some critical setting? Or is it simply that
Matrox still dominates the 2D world?

To give some background, I had an issue trying to install the most
recent ATI Catalyst drivers; never quite pegged it down, but the
computer would hang at the WinXP splash screen. Switched to most
recent Omega (a suggestion from this group . . . thanks) and they work
no problem. I suspect something to do with the .Net Framework s/w as
I understand that the Omega files do not require it. But the Omega
drivers don't supply all that good of a 2D image.

thanks

Omega is crap for 2D, use ATI's drivers. First thing you have to do is
remove all traces of the previous Matrox, Omega, and ATI drivers in the
registry by using Driver Cleaner and the ATI removal tool. Then install
latest Catalyst. Disable that stupid Catalyst Control Center at startup, go
to msconfig and uncheck CLI.exe

How about just not installing CCC in the first place? There is a "driver
only" CAT package available...

v6.3 is available with the good old control panel. Check out the
current drivers fir the Fire MV card...they work fine on Radeons too!

Thanks for the suggestions to date, but any idea what the problem
could be with the original ATI install and inability to run windows?

As previously suggested, try the vanilla driver install, you don't
need CCC.

See my previous post in the thread about v6.3 being available with
control panel!

FYI, the guy who claimed "Omega sucks for 2D" doesn't have a
clue what he's talking about. The Omega drivers use the EXACT
SAME Catalyst core drivers, except it adds some extra utilities and
functionality. Any claimed difference in 2D display quality between
the two drivers exists only in a few people's imagination.
