I have a cat 5 crossover cable between 2 rooms allowing me to share an
internet connection.
Want to change it over to a straight cable, and replacing the cable
would not be easy.

Question: If I join another short crossover cable at one end, do I get
a straight cable?

Thanks ....Ian

I don't think so, but you could get the wiring diagram for a straight
cable and re-wire the crossover cable to be straight. And if you are
planning on installing a router, you can just use the crossover cable.
Most modern routers can handle either straight or crossover cables.

Good luck, jimbo

Look at the following for the wiring diagrams of the cables

Http://www.duxcw.com/digest/Howto/ne...ble/cable5.htm

the way I think two crossover cable would work is that it will
effectively be a straight through cable as you want.

I reckon two crossover cables will go;

cable 1 cable 2
1 -> 3 -> 3 -> 1
2 -> 6 -> 6 -> 2
3 -> 1 -> 1 -> 3
6 -> 2 -> 2 -> 6

Hmmmm?? It looks to me that connecting two crossover cables gives you
a longer crossover cable.

Good luck, jimbo

I don't understand your comment.

instated of pin 1 going to pin 3 with one crossover cable

pin 1 goes to pin 3 in the first cable then the second cable sends pin 3
to pin 1

so this is a straight cable

Huh? If you hook pin 2 to pin 6 then hook pin 6 back to pin 2, the net
result is pin 2 to pin 2. Two crossover cables = 1 straight thru.

Yes, nospam and you are correct. My bad. It would take a crossover
connector block to result in a longer crossover cable.

I still wonder why OP wants to convert to a straight throught cable.
