I have just upgraded my old pc with another 256MB of ram to a total of
512MB,when I boot
the bios reports as it should 524288k of installed ram, then after the
os has loaded in this case xp home (sp2) if I look at taskmanager it
reports 523828k of ram where is the missing 460K ? and does it matter?

Hello,

No - it does not matter as it is a small amount. It could have been reserved
for other use.

Your system has recognized the brand new stick correctly. Enjoy a better
responsive system.

Most likely this is a rounding/units error. You're not missing any thing,
different parts of the system measure the memory in different ways.
