Our new computer came with a 9-in-1 memorty card reader built in. I had no
problems with it at first, but the last few times I used the SD card from my
digital camera in it, when I used the 'remove hardware' in the systray to
remove the card, it removed the icon from the systray and the drives
disappeared from "My Computer" area. If I reboot, they come back and if I
use the reader then use the remove hardware..the same thing happens. I don't
remember it doing that the first couple of times I used it. Did I do
something to change some settings maybe? Is there something I need to tweak
so that it stops doing this. I don't think it is a major problem, but it is
annoying! Thanks!

Maybe you need to go to Disk Management, right-click the "drive"
representing this card reader, click Properties, then the Policies tab. On
this screen, you can choose between Optimize for quick removal or Optimize
for performance. Also, you can specifically assign it a "Drive" letter
here, which WinXP will try to remember and reassign each time you reboot.
(If you don't assign a specific letter, WinXP will assign it a new one
depending on what hardware is connected on each reboot.)

X-in-1 card readers are not all alike. I think that some of them see each
slot as a separate "drive"; others see them all as subdivisions of a single
drive letter. My SD-only SanDisk card reader has no card in it at the
moment, but it is plugged in, set to Optimize for quick removal, and it
shows up in both Disk Management and My Computer as Drive S:. There is a
"safely remove" icon in my SysTray, but it is set to Hide when inactive, so
I don't usually see. (Right-click the clock, then choose Customize
Notifications...)

Ah..that may be it! I checked under disk management and it is already set
for the quick removal. Looking back, I am thinking that the first time I use
the SD card, I may have just removed it and not used the "remove hardware"
tool. Then I read about the card reader and saw that I was supposed to use
it so I did and that is when the problem started. I am guessing that it sets
the system to remove the whole card reader drive and not just the SD
card..and that isn't what I need done. I did check the one time this
happened and the "conflict" icon was showing in the removeable drive section
in the system settings. Thanks so much!! I am going to go take a pic and try
it without using the remove hardware tool and see what happens! Thanks again!
