Help. I'm trying to get some old video 8 analog film
into moviemaker via a Sony DCR-PC9E using the signal
convert function in the DV camcorder. So, I have the old
analog camcorder connected to DV camcorder via phono
lead / a/v connector, and the DV camcorder to the PC
through the usual firewire port. The DV has been set to
the Sony recommended setting but as soon as I hit capture
film, the PC wants to record the tape in the DV and not
the signal from the analog camcorder. It makes no odds
if there is no tape in the DV camcorder either as
moviemaker then tells me to insert tape. What am I
missing to get moviemaker to pick up the converted signal
from the DV camcorder?

This is a commonly reported problem, but I've never seen a solution posted.
I don't think the analog passthrough feature works with MM2.

As a work-around, you could first record your video onto a DV tape, and then
capture from the DV tape to your PC.

Did you receive any video editing/capture software with your Sony camcorder?
If so, you might want to try using that to see if it works.

Wayne-I just posted an identical question except I am using a Canon ZR50 camcorder. I can get everything going except, like you said, MM2 wants to capture off of the tape in the camcorder ONLY. I can get the analog throughput to show in MM2, but no capture. I thought of capturing to DV tape first and then capturing in MM2, but was waiting to see if there was a better way

thanks for the tip which, funnily enough was to be my
next attempt at getting round the snag. You may also
find it of use to know that I have tried to capture
converted analog film into Vegas Video software but with
exactly the same result. Not sure what this tells me
other than perhaps the bundled converters free with
camcorders are perhaps not happy interfacing with XP? I
am no authority on this so just speculating wildly.
Would it be any better with a dedicated, stand alone
converter and no extra camcorder in the loop - I guess so.

thanks for your main tip which will be my next attempt.
Thanks too for bringing me smartly up to speed on earlier
posts on the same topic.

I will also get the DV camcorder box out to see what else
came with it that I have yet to use. I will post my
success story, if / when it ever happens!
