cant write my picture file to a CD

tried for ages to copy and write my pictures file to CD. Using the wizard
that comes with XP and get a message that an error occurred and couldnt
finish the task and to retry. Went on to compaq for help told me to
uninstall the CD rom and then reinstll and I still get the same message, Its
driving me nuts!!
