I have 32 bit Vista.I cannot use my 32 bit HELP files since Vista uses a new
help scheme. I tried to download the 32 bit help files from Microsoft that
would work with the older help files. During the download I get the message
"THE UPDATE DOES NOT APPLY TO YOUR SYSTEM." The program first verified that I
have a legitimate version of Vista. I am desperate to use my help files. I
don't know what to do next. PLEASE HELP !!!!

You can use the winhlp32.exe file from an XP installation, if you have one
available, which may be simpler.

.... but if not then this is the update you'd need to get hold of - which may
not be the one you were trying to download

Windows Help program (WinHlp32.exe) for Windows Vista

Dear Jon;
Thanks for the reply. The update I was trying to download is the one that
you are recommending when I get the error message. Any other solutions
available?

I loaded the winhelp32.exe from an xp computer. I loaded it in system and
system32 in Windowws Vista. This did not work. I then loaded it in the
application where the help files are. It works there when I click on help
there, but not in the application itself where the help menu shows it
unhighlighted.

Similar to what I do - I don't replace the Vista system files either, but
toggle the registry associations for .hlp files between pointing either to
the Vista winhlp32.exe in the Windows directories or to the winhlp32.exe
from XP, which in my case resides on another partition.

That's as far as I got with last time I looked at the issue. Gives you the
ability to open up .hlp files using the older version, or for greater
security toggle back to the Vista one. It's not perfect in that it doesn't
work within the application as you've discovered, but at least you can open
and read the .hlp files, which is better than nothing.

Find this file:

Windows6.0-KB917607-x86.msu

And run it on your Vista system. It enables use of .HLP files.
