Hi everybody,
I have a quite simple network setup that works fine (finally, thanks to Fred
Marshall).
5660 SpeedStream modem (in router mode) <-> SMC wireless router <-> 2
computers. The 5660 is connected to the WAN port of the router.
Out of the 2 computers, one is hardwired and one is connected wirelessly.
I am trying to improve the wireless speed by using a D-Link DI-624 router,
which is supposed to double the wireless transfer speed, to 108Mbps, but if
I simply replace the SMC router with the D-Link I can't get anything in the
browser. But I can sucessfully ping various external addresses such as
4.2.2.2 or even yahoo.com, which proves that DNS works fine. I run all the
tests using a hardwired connection, to keep things simple. Practically all
the D-Link router's setup parameters have their default values, there are no
IP filters on and the firewall is not enabled. I also downloaded their
latest firmware.
I was on the phone with the D-Link tech support guys for over an hour, and
went through all possible setup scenarios and they couldn't figure out the
problem. They claim there must be something wrong with my setup, either the
modem or the computer, but I believe they are wrong, as everything works
fine as long as I don't use their router. They even asked me to try plugging
the 5660 modem directly into my computer, which also worked fine.
And BTW, is there any real value in the Super G protcol from Atheros, which
claims transfer speeds of up to 108 Mbps. Is it worth even upgrading?
With my current 802.11g SMC wireless router, even if the wireless connection
is excellent, loading web pages is visibly slower than being connected by
wire to the router. I thought that since the Internet connection speed of
about 1.5Mbps is much lower than the theoretical 11g 54Mbps, I wouldn't have
such problems.
Any help will be appreciated.
