I recently switched fron verizon online dsl to cable and my internet works
but i still get the verizon animated icon in the upper right corner of IE
and when i try to uninstall "verizon online customer support" from add/remove
programs the uninstall shield just hangs and my pc internal fan starts to
race. i then must use ctrl alt del to end the uninstall shield. also i have
tried to manually delete any verizon files / folders icould find. How can I
get this off my computer?

What you have is a Verizon branded copy of MSIE. What you need is a registry
edit to remove the ISP branding. One of the sites which came up in a Google
search:

I searched on, "remove ISP branding from internet explorer". The result was:
