The "read-only" box for folders is only a short-cut for applying or
removing the attribute to the files contained in the folder. It has no
meaning for the folder itself. Therefore, it *always* shows up as a
checkbox in it's third state: not checked, and not unchecked. That's
the gray box that you're seeing.
If you change it to unchecked and click "OK", all the files are
changed to "not read only". If you set it to checked and click "OK"
all the files are set to "read only".
To see the results, you'll have to look at the individual folders. You
can see them one at a time in Windows Explorer, or use the attrib
command on the command line.
