Can't uncheck "read only"

Has anyone had the problem where their files are checked "read only" in gray
and when you uncheck it, apply and then ok, it continues to be read only?

I have applied it to all folders and subfolders and tried going up a level
all the way to "My Documents" and changing it. When I did this, it appeared
to be going through all the files and folders in "My docs" and changing them
to readable, but a subfolder still had the gray check on read only!

Does it stop you from adding or modifing the files in the folders? It's
a non-issue, almost all folder are marked as read only but that doesn't
mean that they are, Windows mostly ignores the setting.

Actually, it does stop me as I am trying to save the file on a flash drive.
The error message says that the file is read only and can't be saved. I do
not remember changing the security settings on this and it hasn't happened
before.

Strange, I just tried using another flash drive and it seems that it was the
flash drive causing the "read only message" as the second drive allows me to
save it. Can you change the setting on the flash drive?

Thanks

Change the attribute on the file itself, while the folder might be
tagged as Read-Only it doesn't mean that the files inside are or need to
be. If you still cannot copy it to the flash drive then reformat the
flash drive.

Create a new folder on the problem flash drive and see if you can save that
file to the new folder.

Probably a little write protect switch on the thumb drive

The "read-only" box for folders is only a short-cut for applying or
removing the attribute to the files contained in the folder. It has no
meaning for the folder itself. Therefore, it *always* shows up as a
checkbox in it's third state: not checked, and not unchecked. That's
the gray box that you're seeing.

If you change it to unchecked and click "OK", all the files are
changed to "not read only". If you set it to checked and click "OK"
all the files are set to "read only".

To see the results, you'll have to look at the individual folders. You
can see them one at a time in Windows Explorer, or use the attrib
command on the command line.

Does your FLASH drive hava little switch on it to write protect the
contents. Many, but no all, do.
