Can't turn on XP firewall

When I try to turn on my firewall through network
connections, I get: Cannot enable shared access. Error
1061: the service cannot accept control messages at this
time.

I just installed a large amount of XP updates as well as
Earthlink Total Access 2004.

How do I get my firewall back on?
