Help!!!!!

I am having problems with my friends Dell computer which seemed to be
related to memory issues and possible missing/corrupted files. Whatever the
problem was it is now rather redundant.

I was preparing to reload all of the software to solve this problem and was
backing up various folders to an external hard drive. All I had left to do
was back up "Documents Settings" and one file in the root directory, perhaps
a bit of overkill but the quickest thing to do at the time. However after a
power interruption I now have a Blue Screen which informs me that I have an
Unmountable Boot Volume and I cannot even boot into safe mode. I desperately
need to save the Outlook Express files, the Favourites Folder and one Folder
on the C: drive. My friend has no Start-up Disk and only has a System
Restore Disk as windows came preinstalled (XP PRO). The Computer has 2 DVD
drives, a hard drive, and external hard drive and several USB ports but no
floppy drive. I have a Laptop with a CD rewriter and 2 USB ports and am
running Windows XP Home.

Is there any way I can get at these folders?

Pete

About backing up your friend's data: The item "Lost Windows",
posted here just 20 minutes ago, seems relevant . . .

Here are some options for backing up the data.

1. Take the drive out of the computer and install it as a slave drive in
another Windows XP or 2000 computer. It should read the drive ok, so you can
copy the data.

2. Create a bootable Bart's PE disk, boot from that, then copy the data to
external USB drive or flash drive.

3. Download a bootable Linux distro called Knoppix. Create a bootable CD
from that, boot from it, and copy the data to USB drive or flash drive, or
if the computer has two CD drives, one of which is a burner, then use the
k3b burning program on the Knoppix CD to burn the data to CD.

4. Take it to a competent computer tech to backup the data.
