Every time I try to start up Windows Messenger I get the
message "Messenger has encountered a problem and needs to
close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

The Watson Crash Information says:

"The application, C:\Program Files\Messenger\MSMSGS.EXE,
generated an application error The error occurred on
05/16/2004 @ 16:57:30.140 The exception generated was
c0000005 at address 5D3793F5 (rtcdll!DllCanUnloadNow)"

Doesn't mean a thing to me - anybody help?

Greetings Geoff,

It appears to be crashing on the Real Time Communications (RTC) component. Narrowing exactly
why this is occurring could be difficult, you may simply want to upgrade to Windows Messenger
5, which uses a newer version of RTC:

Hello Jonathan,

I already installed version 5.0.0.482 but it made no
difference. I also installed the latest version of
DirectX (recommended on a different newsgroup) again with
no success. This also seems to be affecting outlook
express now as I suddenly can't send or receive e-mails
or access newsgroups any more.

Any other ideas of how to fix this? It's getting a real
pain now!

Geoff
