The features looked attractive but when I set up my HP PSC1210 I was in for a big surprise.
This is only printer that I know that cannot print over a home network. It will only work with the
computer that's attached to it.

The server shares it as \\server1\hppsc120 but it's impossible to install the driver for the
client in windows 98. When I click 'have disk' and point it to the cd-rom it won't work.
I even tried Deskjet 870 drivers since they seem to work with all other PSC models in windows 98/Me.

The Add Printer wizard just says "The specified location does not contain information about your hardware".

Ok then, how do you manage to install the driver on the windows 98 client ?

All I get from WinMe's Add Printer wizard for the Network printer installation
is the message "The specified location does not contain information about
your hardware" when I point it to the directory with the .inf files.

Correction: My network client is windows Me.

I didn't have to install anything on the client side. I used Network
Neighborhood to browse to the server machine, and double-clicked the shard
printer. It automatically installed some drivers at that time, but I didn't
need the printer CD for the client.

Make sure you followed the installation instructions on that poster supplied
with the printer. Failure to do so excactly may have screwed up your
installation.

I guess it worked for you because both computers are using win98.
Since my server is running XP I have to tell it to save the win98 drivers
as well, so I go in the printer driver sharing properties and click
win95/98/Me in the additional drivers tab. It says:
The file 'psc1200_install' on Windows 95, 98 and Me is needed.
Type the path where the file is located, and then click OK.

Of course if I try to find the file it's not on the CD. Maybe it's
in a CAB.

YES! It works now. This is what I did:
- I booted my server with WinMe (I have another bootable partition
setup with Powerquest PartitionMagic 8)
- installed the win95/98/Me printer driver using the installation CD-ROM
- shared the printer with the same name as in WinXP
- on the client side, used the 'add printer' wizard which then automatically
downloaded the drivers from the server (couldn't do that when the server was XP)
- rebooted the server into WinXP
- print from the WinMe client
Now it works like a charm! Took me 3 days to figure it out.


Well it wasn't the most straightforward printer installation. HP should:
- put a good old .inf on the CD for the add printer wizard,
- drop the memory / disk / whatever requirements for computers that only
need to print remotely (like my portable), (the cd refused to install on the client)
- put that psc1210_install file that's missing on the CD for XP server to be able
to host the 98 drivers
