Using Maxtor External HDs, I can't share folders on the drives when
connected via USB2. (I *can* share these same folders if connected via
firewire.) I can go through the sharing procedure OK, but when I try to
access the folders, even via Network Places on my own machine, (but also on
other machines), the message I get is:

"\\my_machine\test is not accessible. You may not have permission to use
this network resource. Contact administrator of this server to find out if
you have access permissions."
"Not enough server storage is available to process this command."

I've tried this with a couple of drives, both Maxtor One Touch but without
any One Touch software installed. If I connect them to another machine,
using USB2, they work fine. Haven't tried installing One Touch software and
don't think it's the problem.

Any ideas?

Check DM and make sure the USB2 Host Controller is installed and working.
Make sure the USB is enabled in the BIOS.
Update the BIOS.
Update the USB drivers.
Enable/Disable PnP in the BIOS.
Possible IrpStack issue.

Tried all, except I don't understand the last one. Just to make sure you
understand, the drives work fine for all purposes *except* I can't share any
folders on them over the network. Weird. FWIW, this is an Asus P5B Deluxe
mobo. Only thing I haven't tried is a USB card in a PCI slot. Whatever, it's
not even really necessary for me, since I was only testing something
destined for another machine. It's just something I'd like to figure out.

What Filesystem are the externals formatted to ? If NTFS have you
checked the ACLs for the volumes, content ?

You don't have the Firewire and USB plugged in at the same time do you? I've read
somewhere before that they can't be in order to work, doesn't mean it holds true now.
