Can't share files between XP pro and XP Home

So today all of sudden I 'm back to where I was yesterday
morning. I still can not access the laptop files but I
can see both computers on both systems when I VIEW
WORKGROUP COMPUTERS. Now I'm back to where I get
that "need access permission" message on the desktop XP
pro when I try to open up laptop. But from the laptop I
can see everything and access everything on the desktop.

So please explain how I didn't make any change, even
rebooted last night and didn't get this to work.

And why do I still get the win98 files showing on MY
NETWORK PLACES even though I haven't been connected to
the win98 computer for a least 5 or 6 reboots and many
attempts to refresh?
And how do I access the laptop XP home files on my
desktop XP PRO?

You need to have sharing enabled on at least one folder
or printer on the laptop to have it show up to the others.

Assuming you've done that, and that
usernames/passwords/workgroups names are all
synchronized, and that you've tried installing IPX/SPX,
I'd try turning off all the machines and then turning
maybe just the two XP PCs on first. I don't know exactly
what happens in the background, but I do know that
Windows caches a lot and can get confused. Aside from
running some command line programs like nbtstat, the
easiest way to clean things up is to reboot. If you
power off all your PCs, it should clean up any caching
that's going on across the network.

If you want to try the command-line utilities, I can't
help you, but you could try searching for nbtstat on this
forum, or just running nbtstat by itself from a command
prompt.

As for Network Places, it remembers places you've created
(or visited - I'm not sure which) in the past and puts
them there for easy reference. I've got shortcuts on My
Network Places that I haven't accessed for months.

GReat web site. I found all the things I had tried but
couldn't remember why (like uppercase passwords and
enabling netbios over tcp/ip).
I installed nwlink ipx/spx and it worked for me so I
never got to your suggestions.
But thanks for your website. What a shame Microsoft can't
provide such a service.

THanks Dan, installing IPX/SPX worked.
