Can't send mail from Internet Explorer 7

When I click on a mail link (or a email adress) in Internet Explorer 7 I get
an error message saying something like this

"The action could not take place as the standard client for mail is not
installed correct"

It is very annoying as I then have to mark up the email adress and use
copy-paste to send the mail from within Windows mail.

Anybody has suggestion about this error?

Go to Control Panel>Classic View> (top left),>Default Programs and ensure
that WM as all its defaults selected.

Thank you for your response; I have done that but the problem still
persists. Do you have any other suggestions?

Go back to Control Panel etc, and click on the bottom option 'set program
access and computer defaults, check out the available options there?
Sometimes, though not always, a reboot can kick some changed settings into
action.

Did you confirm that it says Windows Mail has all 3 of its defaults?
There is an illustrated guide here:

Yes, it has all 3 of its defaults, exactly as shown in the link.

Very peculiar. It sounds like WM is not registered with the OS.

Type or paste the following into a Command Prompt and hit Enter:

"C:\Program Files\Windows Mail\WinMail.exe" OCInstallReinstallOE

(include the quotation marks)

Then reboot and see if MailTo links on web pages work.
