Can't Select Created Hardware Profiles

To recover my HP Pavilion N5390 notebook's configuration,
I had to upgrade from Win 2000 Pro to XP Pro. (Win 2000
Pro install could not be repaired.)

Now, the hardware profiles I have created do not work. I
select a hardware profile and the default "Profile 1"
still comes up as the "current profile" every time.

I have recreated the additional hardware profiles twice
IAW SOP, and still no go. I still get "Profile 1" as
the "current profile" no matter what profile I have
selected at boot time.

How might one fix this, absent trying a repair of the XP
Pro upgrade, in which case, I have to replace many
upgraded files, as I understand it. I want to avoid that
if I can.

Thanks.
