Dawn,

Open C:\Windows\System32 folder
Right-click mmc.exe and choose Properties
Click the Version tab and check the file version / Company name etc.

From my system:

CompanyName: Microsoft Corporation
FileDescription: Microsoft Management Console
FileVersion: 5.1.2600.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158)
InternalName: mmc.exe
LegalCopyright: © Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
OriginalFilename: mmc.exe
ProductName: Microsoft® Windows® Operating System
ProductVersion: 5.1.2600.2180

Dawn,

It's most likely a malware file, and a 16 bit app. Delete the existing
mmc.exe and have Windows XP issue a fresh copy for you automatically.
Alternately, expand a fresh copy from the source (which is either the
Windows XP CD or the i386 folder in the hard disk)
