Can't see wireless networks

The laptop of a relative of mine can't see what wireless networks are
available. The wireless does work, they can go anywhere on the 'net they
want to, it's just that they can't see what wireless networks are available

When I right click on the wireless icon in the tray or in
start/settings/network/connections and select "view wireless connections,"
this is what I see where the available wireless networks should be listed.
(there are no programs capable of managing the wireless connection). How do
I fix this?

Here is the Knowledge Base article that the message refers to:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/871122/en-us

Try running that service.

You will need to check and

1) Turn off the wireless adapter manufacturer's monitor utility

2) Under Services, turn on "Wireless Zero Configuration" service.
