I use several Dynamic Web Templates (.dwt) for our site
and when I look in the Reports Window under Dynamic Web
Templates I see a list of files with the Name, Title,
Folder etc. but I don't see anything under Dynamic Web
Template. Ultimately, it would be nice to see this to
verify and group the files that are attached to the
various .dwt files. Am I missing something?

Thanks,
Debbie

This problem occurs on sites running the FrontPage Server
Extensions 2002 and earlier.

Because DWTs didn't exist in FP2002 and earlier, those
server extensions don't maintain cross-reference
information for them. This also interferes with
propagating changed DWTs into the pages that use them.

Disk-based Webs and sites running on Windows SharePoint
Services don't have this problem.

Is there a way to fix this so that you can view the DWT info in reports

I normally don't recommend this, but if the server-based Web site
resides on your local system or a server to which you have
file-sharing access:

1. Open it as a disk-based Web.
2. Recalculate hyperlinks.

Having done this, the DWT information will show up in reports
view, even if you open the site as a server-based Web. However,
the FrontPage 2002 server extensions still won't keep the
information up-to-date, and they still won't propagate changes
from templates to pages that attach them.

IMHO, lack of server extension support for DWTs is a major
deficiency, and Microsoft should release an updated version of
the server extensions that fixes this. But I have no idea
whether any such thing is in the works.

In the short-term, if you're not doing any server-side
programming, maybe you don't need a server-based development
site. This seems to be the scenario Microsoft had in mind for
DWTs.

If you *are* doing server-side programming, consider doing it in
ASP.NET, which offers a very cool feature called Web User Controls.
These are independent "packages" of HTML and program code that
you can add to ASP.NET Web pages. Otherwise, you may prefer to
stick with Shared Borders or Include Page components.
