I can't see a type or see a £ sign

This might seem a bit weird and if anyone can help me
then I will by them a drink!

I'm in england and I can't seem to be able to view the £
sign. I can't even type it on some pages!! On a web page
that has a the english currency on it, it displays "J".

I've cheked the encoding and also the settings in control
panel and they seem to be ok. All other programmes are
working fine.

Do you think I've been hacked?
