can't see the network?

hi All,

I can't see the network from the Network Palace. however,
if i go to Run and type in \\machine name. it prompts me
for the login. I used my login is not working, but
someother guys in the company work fine with their login.

I am using a VPN client logining from a remote location to
our private network.

1. first how can i see the network?
2. what permission do i need to get access to all the
shared file on the network? i.e \\machine name..
