I know this will seem like an odd situation but...

A few weeks ago I came across some information, most likely on the web
somewhere, that explained how to make a change to my computer that would
help block unwanted advertising through my web browser (iexplorer). Sounded
like a great idea so I did it and now I don't get to see any banner ads in
my browser. Problem is, there is a particular site that I visit quite often
that is plastered with "sponsor" banner ads. Ads that I find quite helpful,
but are now gone! I can not for the life of me remember what that little
trick is that I did. I'm not sure if it was in iexplorer, the shell program
I use to access the web (Avant Browser) or a setting in windows somewhere. I
thought perhaps it was an entry in my hosts file but the only entry in there
is "127.0.0.1 localhost". I tried to delete this file and reopen
explorer but the ads were still gone. I reset iexplorers security settings
back to medium (from custom) to no avail. Does anyone have any suggestions
on where I might try next?

Is Spybot installed with everything Immunized? Are you using a custom HOSTS
file?

I don't have any spyware software installed and the only entry in my Hosts
file is what I posted in the original post...

127.0.0.1 localhost

Well, then, activate the over-ride switch. Virtually all ad-blockers, pop-up
blockers, download blockers, and hat blockers have some way to temporarily
disable their function.

What you COULD do is Google search for something like
"web+banner+ad+blocking" and go to each site listed (shouldn't be more than
a few thousand) until you find one that triggers a rememberance.

Whatever I did, I didn't install anything. I recall reading some
instructions online and doing something to an existing program - iexplorer,
avant or windows. Does reinstalling windows sound like overreacting!!

Yes, it sure does!

Until you get this sorted out, why not use another browser for that
particular Web site? There's Opera, Firefox, and one of my favorites --
K-Meleon, to name a few.

Can you use plain vanilla IE without the Avant shell? That might work.

Does Avant have any settings that might block banner ads?

Also, you may want to post to this forum:
