Using XP Pro SP2. Not sure if that's relevant(but since
I installed SP2 I noticed the problem). When downloading
trial software I 'Save' the download and then open it
from my computer. I can no longer do this. The only
working option I have is to 'Run' the download. I need
to fix this. How? (Not opposed to modifying registry)

Thanks,

matt

Hi Matt -

Maybe this:
Folder options> File Types is what you're looking for (perhaps).
The path to Folder Options may vary according to your operating system. The
possible paths are:

Explorer - View - Folder Options - File Types
Explorer -Tools - Folder Options - FileTypes
Start - Settings - Folder Options - File Types
Start - Settings - Control Panel - Folder options - File Types

Once there, scroll down to the file type(s) in question (or whatever *other*
type of download
file that you would like the save option dialogue box to appear for)>
Highlight it (select) >edit (or advanced) button> and check the box for
"Confirm open after download"> OK> OK out.

One other thing which I overlooked Matt. Make sure you haven't any
restrictions to your IE "Options". Not absolutely sure if XP SP2 has
"overridden ones access or ability with these. But see here:

Hi,

I am having the same problem with my XP Pro SP2 install. I am fairly
sure that I have been able to download since SP2, but seems to be
related to either installing a new Bios for my Gigabyte board,
Installing Real Player, or inadvertently installing the DVD player
software, Interactual Player v2.0 that comes with some DVDs. If
anyone has any ideas, please let me know, this is really frustrating!

Thanks in advance for any help.

Jake.

Hi Jake :-)

Try the following and see if it helps:

No Save prompt when downloading -

Internet Explorer Opens .exe Files Instead of Downloading Them
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=140991

IE6 opens up downloaded files instead of prompting to save

Courtesy of Jim Byrd:

You need to check this and/or set it for those not checked for each file
type that you download:

Open Windows Explorer and go to Tools | Folder Options | File Types.
Scroll down to the file type in question, e.g. for .zip
Find the .zip association (may be WinZip File, for this example)
Click on Edit or Advanced, depending on your Windows version, and check
the "Confirm open after download" box

If no joy, then see the information below:

Open a DOS window and enter at the prompt "ipconfig
/flushdns" (without the quotes), then enter at the prompt "ipconfig
/registerdns" (without the quotes). Test and if this has fixed
things, stop here. Else,

Now IF AND ONLY IF YOU ARE COMFORTABLE WORKING WITH THE REGISTRY, open
Regedit and browse to this key if you have it (I don't currently have a
copy of Win98 installed, so I can't check for you).

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Dnscache\Parameters]

If you do and it contains the following keys (not necessarily with these
particular values):

"NegativeCacheTime"=dword:0000012c
"NetFailureCacheTime"=dword:0000001e
"NegativeSOACacheTime"=dword:00000078

then Export this entire entry for backup, and then set each of these
values to dword:00000000

See if that helps. If not merge back the .reg file you exported above
to restore the original values. Please post back with your
actions/results.

If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to this thread
with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps
